The World Pheasant Association (WPA)

The World Pheasant Association (WPA) is a UK-registered charity (no. 1181022), founded in 1975 to promote the conservation of galliformes worldwide through research, conservation breeding, education, and in-situ projects. Its work is guided by specialist committees, including the Conservation Breeding and Advisory Group, which manages backup populations and studbooks to protect genetic diversity, the European Conservation Breeding Group, which coordinates European efforts, and the Scientific Advisory Committee, which advises on projects and tracks scientific and technical advances. Every 3–4 years, WPA hosts an International Galliformes Symposium, with the 9th scheduled for Pokhara, Nepal, in 2026.

About BIOCOS Nepal

BIOCOS Nepal was founded in 2002 by young conservationists and formally established in 2008 (registered number 2761/49, affiliated with the Social Welfare Council, Kathmandu). The organisation conducts research on wildlife and habitats, studies human–biodiversity interactions, and runs community-based conservation and awareness programmes. Focusing on key threatened species such as snow leopards, musk deer, Himalayan black bears, and Himalayan pheasants, BIOCOS Nepal works across Nepal’s protected areas and has facilitated the Veterinary CPD programme.

The Nepal Veterinary Association (NVA)

The Nepal Veterinary Association (NVA), established in 1967, is Nepal’s national professional body for veterinarians. It advances veterinary medicine, animal welfare, public health, and livestock productivity while supporting members through education, policy advice, and community engagement. Representing around 2,000 veterinarians, NVA collaborates nationally and internationally to promote disease prevention, food safety, and sustainable development in Nepal’s livestock sector.

Meet the Team

Meet the team who work with the World Pheasant Association, BIOCOS Nepal, and the Nepal Veterinary Association to deliver conservation and veterinary programmes in Nepal. Tours are run at cost by Namaste Manang to raise funds for this work. The team are UK-based volunteers supporting the protection of Himalayan pheasants, a flagship species that indicates the health of the environment.

 Rosie Northcote-Smith

Rosey Northcote-Smith is a member of the World Pheasant Association, having been involved for the last 45 years, including being on their Fund Raising Committee for many years.  Her background is in electronics engineering, unusually also coupled with horticulture and animal husbandry.  Conservation work has always run alongside her full-time technical work.  She currently both oversees and accompanies the tours in Nepal, providing a wide range of background information. Her top tips from a lifetime of travel are very helpful to those going to experience a new country.

Susie Walker-Munro

Susie Walker-Munro is a Trustee of the World Pheasant Association.  Her father Keith Howman was a founder member 50 years ago, and responsible for her eclectic upbringing surrounded by exotic and endangered pheasants.  Her overseas work for a large part has focused on conservation of the galliformes.  Today she runs a tea garden in Scotland and over the winter months has the opportunity to focus on helping to raise awareness of the work that WPA does, particularly in Nepal.  Nepal is very much in the frame due to this year hosting the 9th International Galliformes Symposium in Pokhara this coming October.
